Biographies (in
alphabetical order)
Richard
Allington (2005 Colloquium Speaker) is Professor of
Education at the University of Tennessee and the President-Elect
of the International Reading Association. He is the author or co-author
of more than 100 research articles and several books. Among the
books are: Classrooms that work; Schools that work; No quick fix;
What really matters for struggling readers; and Big brother and
the national reading curriculum. Dr. Allington serves on the editorial
board of Reading Research Quarterly, Remedial and Special Education,
Journal of Literacy Research, and the Elementary School Journal.
Prior to his current appointment, he was the Irving and Rose Fien
Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Florida.
Lorin
W. Anderson (Coordinator of Research & In-Service Teacher
Development, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) is
a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Curriculum Studies at the
University of South Carolina, where he has served on the faculty
since 1973. He holds a Ph.D. in Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistical
Analysis from the University of Chicago. Dr. Anderson’s research
interests include classroom instruction, student engagement in learning,
and the education of economically-disadvantages children and youth.
He is a member of the International Academy of Education.
Joseph
Aniello (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force)
is Associate Professor of Management at Francis Marion University
and Director of the Donald E. Kelley Small Business Institute. Dr.
Aniello received his Ed.D. from Vanderbilt University in the summer
of 2003 where his major area of study was in the discipline of Human
Resource and Organizational Development. He received his B.S. in
Business from Fairfield University in Connecticut and his MBA in
Marketing from Fordham University in New York City. Before his appointment
at Francis Marion University, Dr. Aniello taught Organizational
Behavior at Vanderbilt University.
Sharon
Moore Askins (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force)
is Assistant Professor in the Francis Marion University School of
Education after twenty-nine years in K-12 public education. Dr.
Askins was a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and an assistant
superintendent for instruction for twenty-seven years in Florence
County School District Three, and she recently served as a State
Department of Education principal leader in Lee County and in Orangeburg
Consolidated School District Five.

presently serves as the Curriculum Coordinator at Marion Intermediate

Learning Disabilities and Instructional Accommodation/Divergent
Learner degrees at Francis Marion University. Dr. Bausmith’s
research, consulting, and presentations address assessment of learning
styles, design of congruent instructional actions, and moderation
of school climate for heightened receptivity to divergent learners.
Her prior experiences involved public school special education and
department administration at the secondary level.
Markey
Bee (COE Project Manager; School-Parent-Community Liaison)
received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from the University
of Maryland at College Park and master’s degree in Education
from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. Involved in early childhood
education for over twenty five years, her previous experiences include
kindergarten teacher, day care services coordinator for the Department
of Social Services, education specialist at the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington and education consultant providing training
and technical assistance to public, private and federally funded
early childhood professionals. Bee is trained in the Early Childhood
Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) and she was a member of the writing
team for the South Carolina ECERS Training Modules. She currently
serves as the Representative for the Coastal Cluster of the South
Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children.

She has also authored numerous other publications related to diversity.
Dr. Boutte’ has presented nationally and internationally on
diversity issues and enjoys working with teachers and schools. She
is also the Principal Investigator for the Center of Excellence
for the Education and Equity of African American students in Columbia,
South Carolina.

Ann Byrd (Pre-Service Teacher Education
Task Force), Director of CERRA, is an informed advocate
for the teaching profession, non-partisan advisor to legislators
and teacher/administrator organizations and a resource for higher
education teacher preparation programs. In addition to her work
on the state level, she sits on the NBPTS® Board of Directors.
Ms. Byrd earned a bachelor's degree in secondary English education
from the University of South Carolina and a master's degree in secondary
English education from Winthrop University. She is enrolled in the
education leadership doctoral program in K-12 curriculum and instruction
with a cognate in administration at the University of South Carolina.
She earned National Board Certification® in English language
arts for Adolescents and Young Adults in November of 2000. After
a total of seven years working with Teacher Cadets and 13 years
in the classroom as an English and journalism teacher, Ms. Byrd
served as a Teacher in Residence for three years and a Program Director
for one year at CERRA (formerly the South Carolina Center for Teacher
Recruitment) in Rock Hill, South Carolina, prior to becoming the
Director in July, 2000.

Epstein (2005 Colloquium Speaker)
is Director of the Center on School, Family, and Community Partnerships,
Principal Research Scientist and Co-Director of the School, Family,
and Community Partnership Program of the Center for Research on
the Education of Students Placed at Risk (CRESPAR), with a joint/part
time appointment of Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Epstein received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University.
She has over one hundred publications on the effects of school,
classroom, family, and peer environments on student learning and
development, with many focusing on school and family connections.
In all of her work, she is interested in the connections of research,
policy, and practice.
Carolyn
M. Evertson (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force)
is Professor of Education Emerita, and Associate Dean for Graduate
Education at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. Her research
has focused on research on teaching and classroom management and
research on mentoring and new teacher assistance. She received her
doctorate in Educational Psychology and baccalaureate degree in
Elementary Education from the University of Texas, Austin. While
at Peabody College, Vanderbilt, she has directed several federally
funded projects on classroom teaching and teacher education. Her
writings include over 100 chapters, articles, and books on teacher
education, learning in classrooms and research on teaching. Dr.
Evertson is interested in the social contexts of classrooms and
how these contexts influence what students have an opportunity to
learn and how learning gets defined by students and teachers.
J.
Ron Faulkenberry (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force,
In-service Teacher Education Task Force) is Dean of the
School of Education and Professor of Health Education at Francis
Marion University, where he has taught since 1974. Dr. Faulkenberry
received his Ed.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1979.
Before his appointment at FMU, Ron taught in public school at the
elementary, middle and secondary levels. His research interests
include health risk management, and instructional and curricular
approaches and development.
Christine
Finnan (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is
an Associate Dean in the School of Education at the College of Charleston
and an associate professor in the Elementary and Early Childhood
Department. In addition to these duties, she directs the South Carolina/Georgia
Accelerated Schools Center located at the College of Charleston.
She has also served as director of the College of Charleston's Center
of Excellence in Accelerating Learning. Dr. Finnan received a B.A.
in folklore from University of California, Berkeley, an M. A. in
anthropology and folklore from University of Texas, Austin, and
a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University.

from Clemson University. Prior to his tenure at FMU, Fox taught

at Francis Marion University, Dr. Harris taught at Fort Valley State

interests include recognition of facial expressions of emotion,
child abuse and neglect issues, and intervention for children with
developmental disabilities. She is currently an Associate Professor
of Psychology at Francis Marion University and is the chair of the
Professional Advisory Council for the Durant Children’s Center,
the child advocacy center for the Pee Dee Region of South Carolina.

SC. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from North
Greenville College, and is presently working on a Masters in Early
Childhood Education from Francis Marion and in Instructional Technology
from Grand Canyon University.
Sam
Stringfield (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force)
is a Distinguished University Scholar and Co-Director of
the Nystrand Center for Excellence in Education in the College of
Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville.
He is a founding editor of the Journal of Education for Students
Placed at Risk (JESPAR). Prior to coming to the University of Louisville,
Stringfield directed the systemic supports for school reform program
of the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at
Risk at Johns Hopkins University. From 1999 to 2004, he served on
the Baltimore City New Board of School Commissioners. Earlier, Stringfield
worked as a teacher, a program evaluator, a Tulane University faculty
member, and as coordinator of the Denver office of Northwest Regional
Educational Laboratory. As a Kellogg Fellow, Stringfield studied
the politics and economics of school improvement in the U.S., Asia,
Africa, and Europe. He currently is a Robert Wood Johnson Urban
Health Initiative Fellow, studying the interactions of diverse social
systems as they impact health and education.
Kevin
Swick (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is
a Professor of Education at the University of South Carolina, Columbia.
He has worked with several early childhood, parenting, and teacher
education projects to address the complex issues of poverty, including
Head Start, Even Start, and Title I teacher training. His emphasis
on empowering teachers and families is reflected in his research
and scholarly work. He has authored or co-authored more than 25
books and 100 articles and book chapters. Dr. Swick has taught for
over 35 years in public schools and colleges/universities. He received
his Ph. D. from the University of Connecticut in 1970.
Stephen
Taylor (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is
currently Professor of Education in graduate programs at Francis
Marion University. He was formerly Director of Graduate Studies
and program head for the Learning Disabilities and Instructional
Accommodation/Divergent Learner options. His research has centered
upon the diagnosis and accommodation of difficult learning configurations
in normal students and brain dysfunctions within the special population.
Dr. Taylor’s consulting specialties include test score and
other performance analyses through descriptive and inferential statistics,
family/ early literacy projects, and professional training for educators
and social services personnel.
Sharon
Thames (Clinical Faculty) received a B.S. degree from
Winthrop College and a M.Ed. degree from Francis Marion University.
She also holds an administration certification from USC. Thames
has served as a special education teacher, a kindergarten teacher,
and as curriculum coordinator, and much of her professional experience
has been in Pee Dee region schools that serve children of poverty.
She presently serves as a South Carolina Reading First Literacy
Coach.
Joel
Thayer (Undergraduate Modules) is Professor of Sociology
at Francis Marion University. He earned the degree of Bachelor of
Science in sociology from Stetson University; and the Master of
Science Doctor of Philosophy degrees in sociology from Florida State
University.
Nichole
Thompson (Clinical Faculty) received both her bachelor’s
and master’s degree from Francis Marion University. In her
9th year in education, she has taught child development, kindergarten,
and 3rd grade. Thompson presently teaches 4th grade and serves as
the grade level chairperson.
William
Thompson (Action Research Project)
Morehead State University, Morehead, KY - graduated in 1982 with
a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Studies and a commission
as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army.
Spent 22 years as an officer in the Army before retiring in 2002
and becoming a JROTC instructor at Latta High School, Latta, SC.
I teach grades 9 through 12.
Tom
Truitt (Pre-Service
Teacher Education Task Force; In-service Teacher Education Task
Force, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) was formerly
the Executive Director of the Pee Dee Education Center, a consortium
of eighteen school districts and Francis Marion University that
was established in 1967 to provide support for the school districts
in the region. Dr. Truitt works to obtain and coordinate direct
services for member districts, and to facilitate the center’s
role as an authoritative communications link with political and
educational entities throughout South Carolina.

D. West (Curriculum Development Project) is Associate
Professor of Mathematics at Francis Marion University. He earned
the B.S. degree in Mathematics from the US Military Academy, the
M.S. in Applied Mathematics from University of Colorado, Boulder,
and the Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from New York University.
Bill
Whitmire (Curriculum Development Project) is Associate
Professor of Mathematics and
Coordinator of Secondary Education Certification-Mathematics Programs
at Francis Marion University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree
in Chemistry and Mathematics from Lander College, the Master’s
degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Kentucky,
and the Education Specialist and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in
Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia. Dr. Whitmire’s
research interests include using technology to enhance student understanding
of mathematics from the kindergarten through college.

presently serves as Curriculum Coordinator at Easterling Primary
in Marion School District One. She has participated in the Taxonomy
Academy through the SC State Department of Education.

from Capella University.
