Individual Biographies (in alphabetical order)

Richard Allington (2005 Colloquium Speaker) is Professor of Education at the University of Tennessee and the President-Elect of the International Reading Association. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 research articles and several books. Among the books are: Classrooms that work; Schools that work; No quick fix; What really matters for struggling readers; and Big brother and the national reading curriculum. Dr. Allington serves on the editorial board of Reading Research Quarterly, Remedial and Special Education, Journal of Literacy Research, and the Elementary School Journal. Prior to his current appointment, he was the Irving and Rose Fien Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Florida.

Lorin W. Anderson (Coordinator of Research & In-Service Teacher Development, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of Curriculum Studies at the University of South Carolina, where he has served on the faculty since 1973. He holds a Ph.D. in Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistical Analysis from the University of Chicago. Dr. Anderson’s research interests include classroom instruction, student engagement in learning, and the education of economically-disadvantages children and youth. He is a member of the International Academy of Education.

Joseph Aniello (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is Associate Professor of Management at Francis Marion University and Director of the Donald E. Kelley Small Business Institute. Dr. Aniello received his Ed.D. from Vanderbilt University in the summer of 2003 where his major area of study was in the discipline of Human Resource and Organizational Development. He received his B.S. in Business from Fairfield University in Connecticut and his MBA in Marketing from Fordham University in New York City. Before his appointment at Francis Marion University, Dr. Aniello taught Organizational Behavior at Vanderbilt University.

Sharon Moore Askins (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is Assistant Professor in the Francis Marion University School of Education after twenty-nine years in K-12 public education. Dr. Askins was a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and an assistant superintendent for instruction for twenty-seven years in Florence County School District Three, and she recently served as a State Department of Education principal leader in Lee County and in Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five.

Patricia Atkinson (In-service Teacher Education Task Force) presently serves as the Curriculum Coordinator at Marion Intermediate School in Marion School District One. She has participated in the Taxonomy Academy through the SC State Department of Education.

Ginger A. Baggette (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 4th grade at Delmae Elementary School in Florence, SC. She holds a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from the University of South Carolina.

David L. Bailey (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 7th grade at Williams Middle School in Florence, SC. He holds a BS degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Barbara Baker (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 3rd grade and Honors at McCormick Elementary in Mullins, SC. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Francis Marion University and a Master’s of Education from the University of South Carolina.

Shirley Bausmith (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is currently Coordinator of Graduate Studies and program head for the M.A.T. Learning Disabilities and Instructional Accommodation/Divergent Learner degrees at Francis Marion University. Dr. Bausmith’s research, consulting, and presentations address assessment of learning styles, design of congruent instructional actions, and moderation of school climate for heightened receptivity to divergent learners. Her prior experiences involved public school special education and department administration at the secondary level.

Markey Bee (COE Project Manager; School-Parent-Community Liaison) received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maryland at College Park and master’s degree in Education from Cambridge College in Massachusetts. Involved in early childhood education for over twenty five years, her previous experiences include kindergarten teacher, day care services coordinator for the Department of Social Services, education specialist at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and education consultant providing training and technical assistance to public, private and federally funded early childhood professionals. Bee is trained in the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) and she was a member of the writing team for the South Carolina ECERS Training Modules. She currently serves as the Representative for the Coastal Cluster of the South Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children.

Gloria Swindler Boutte’ (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is a Professor of Education at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina. She is the author of Multicultural Education: Raising Consciousness and Resounding Voices: School Experiences of People From Diverse Ethnic Backgrounds. She has also authored numerous other publications related to diversity. Dr. Boutte’ has presented nationally and internationally on diversity issues and enjoys working with teachers and schools. She is also the Principal Investigator for the Center of Excellence for the Education and Equity of African American students in Columbia, South Carolina.

Toni Brandt (In-service Teacher Education Task Force; Curriculum Development Project) teaches Social Studies at Darlington High School. She has worked on the design and implementation of a school within a school project for ‘at risk’ students and, after attending the Taxonomy Academy, Ms. Brandt has had a leadership role in the staff development in Darlington County..

Susan H. Bruton (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies at Greenwood Elementary. She earned the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Francis Marion College and the Master of Education in Education in Technology from Lesley University.

Debra Butler (Clinical Faculty 2005, Dillon 2; Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) grew up in Dillon, SC and received her early education in the public school system there. She earned the B.S. and Masters degrees from Francis Marion College, and she has completed 30 hours above the Master's. Ms. Butler returned to Dillon and has taught second grade for six years and kindergarten for 17 years.

Patricia Ann Byrd (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force), Director of CERRA, is an informed advocate for the teaching profession, non-partisan advisor to legislators and teacher/administrator organizations and a resource for higher education teacher preparation programs. In addition to her work on the state level, she sits on the NBPTS® Board of Directors. Ms. Byrd earned a bachelor's degree in secondary English education from the University of South Carolina and a master's degree in secondary English education from Winthrop University. She is enrolled in the education leadership doctoral program in K-12 curriculum and instruction with a cognate in administration at the University of South Carolina. She earned National Board Certification® in English language arts for Adolescents and Young Adults in November of 2000. After a total of seven years working with Teacher Cadets and 13 years in the classroom as an English and journalism teacher, Ms. Byrd served as a Teacher in Residence for three years and a Program Director for one year at CERRA (formerly the South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment) in Rock Hill, South Carolina, prior to becoming the Director in July, 2000.


Rhetta Calcutt (Clinical Faculty) earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Francis Marion University. In her 20th year of teaching, Calcutt has experience in Readiness First Grade and 2nd Grade. She presently teaches 3rd Grade Mathematics.

Larry Crapse (Undergraduate Modules) presently serves as Instructor of Education at Francis Marion University and as the Coordinator of English in Florence School District One. Crapse earned the B.A. degree from the University of South Carolina and the M.A.T. from The Citadel. He has earned numerous awards for his teaching and educational leadership from professional, educational and civic organizations.

Cynthia Dawsey (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 3rd grade at Rains Centenary Elementary, in Rains, SC. She earned the B.A. degree from the University of South Carolina, Coastal Carolina.

LouAnne Dozier (Clinical Faculty) earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Francis Marion College and a master’s degree in Education from Cambridge College. She has taught 16 years in middle to high poverty areas in South Carolina. She presently teaches 3rd grade at McCormick Elementary in Marion School District 2.

Dixie Drew (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 6th grade at Gordon Elementary in Dillon, SC. She holds the Master’s degree in Creative Education and the Master’s plus 30 hours in Elementary Education.

Kasandra Durant (Curriculum Development Project) is a 2nd Grade Teacher at McLaurin Elementary School in Florence, SC. She holds the degree of Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University, a Master of Education in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University, and a Masters plus 30 from Francis Marion University and the University of South Carolina.

Erin Elko (School-Parent-Community Interim Liaison) is a native of Florence, South Carolina. She has worked with the Florence School District One Parent-Child Home Program for the last three years. She has also served on the Voices for South Carolina's Children grant team. Before taking the leap into Family Literacy, Elko worked in journalism.

Polly Elkins (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is currently the Director of School Reform for Dillon County School District Two. Prior to this position, she has held numerous positions, including Principal of East Elementary School in Dillon, South Carolina, Director of School to Work in the Dillon County Schools for four years, and music teacher and band director for five years. Ms. Elkins also served as the Director of the Dillon County Chamber of Commerce for five years.

Joyce Epstein (2005 Colloquium Speaker) is Director of the Center on School, Family, and Community Partnerships, Principal Research Scientist and Co-Director of the School, Family, and Community Partnership Program of the Center for Research on the Education of Students Placed at Risk (CRESPAR), with a joint/part time appointment of Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Epstein received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Johns Hopkins University. She has over one hundred publications on the effects of school, classroom, family, and peer environments on student learning and development, with many focusing on school and family connections. In all of her work, she is interested in the connections of research, policy, and practice.

Carolyn M. Evertson (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is Professor of Education Emerita, and Associate Dean for Graduate Education at Peabody College, Vanderbilt University. Her research has focused on research on teaching and classroom management and research on mentoring and new teacher assistance. She received her doctorate in Educational Psychology and baccalaureate degree in Elementary Education from the University of Texas, Austin. While at Peabody College, Vanderbilt, she has directed several federally funded projects on classroom teaching and teacher education. Her writings include over 100 chapters, articles, and books on teacher education, learning in classrooms and research on teaching. Dr. Evertson is interested in the social contexts of classrooms and how these contexts influence what students have an opportunity to learn and how learning gets defined by students and teachers.

J. Ron Faulkenberry (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) is Dean of the School of Education and Professor of Health Education at Francis Marion University, where he has taught since 1974. Dr. Faulkenberry received his Ed.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1979. Before his appointment at FMU, Ron taught in public school at the elementary, middle and secondary levels. His research interests include health risk management, and instructional and curricular approaches and development.

Christine Finnan (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is an Associate Dean in the School of Education at the College of Charleston and an associate professor in the Elementary and Early Childhood Department. In addition to these duties, she directs the South Carolina/Georgia Accelerated Schools Center located at the College of Charleston. She has also served as director of the College of Charleston's Center of Excellence in Accelerating Learning. Dr. Finnan received a B.A. in folklore from University of California, Berkeley, an M. A. in anthropology and folklore from University of Texas, Austin, and a Ph.D. in education from Stanford University.

Ella Ford (Action Research Project) teaches 7th and 8th grade Science at Palmetto Elementary and Middle School in Mullins, SC. She earned the Bachelor of Science degree from South Carolina State University, and the Master of Education degree from Cambridge College, Cambridge Mass.

Cindy Fowler (In-service Teacher Education Task Force) has earned the degree of M.Ed. She has 21 years of experience as a mathematics educator in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. Ms. Fowler presently serves as a Math Coach in the Math/Science Unit of McCormick Elementary School in Marion School District 2.

William P. Fox (Curriculum Development Project) is Professor and Chair of the Mathematics Department at Francis Marion University, where he teaches all levels of college mathematics. He earned the B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy, the M.S. degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, and the Ph.D. from Clemson University. Prior to his tenure at FMU, Fox taught mathematics at the United States Military Academy.

Scarlett Gee (Clinical Faculty) graduated from Francis Marion University with a B.S. in Early Childhood and a Master's Degree in Remediation. Gee taught 2nd grade and kindergarten before working with the State Department of Education as a Kindergarten Teacher Specialist On Site for two years. She returned to Darlington County as a Literacy Teacher for grades K-3, and presently serves as the Coordinating Teacher at Lamar Elementary for grades K-3.

Linda Graham (Darlington School District Contact; Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) began her professional career in Florence School District 1 after earning the B.S. degree in Elementary Education from South Carolina State University and the M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Francis Marion University. She was awarded the M. Ed in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina, and served as principal of Palmetto Gold Award, Compaq A+, GE Elfun Society Grant, and SDE’s Red Carpet Award winning schools in Darlington County School District. Ms. Graham presently serves there as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and was recognized by the Education Oversight Committee for “Closing the Achievement Gap.”

Nancy Graham (In-service Teacher Education Task Force) currently serves as Director of Instruction in Marion School District 2. She has over 20 years of experience, including 14 years as a classroom teacher, and 6 years in school administration in this rural school district in the Pee Dee region.

Patricia S. Grant (Curriculum Development Project) teaches 4th grade at Marion Intermediate School in Marion, SC. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Auburn University and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Lesley University.

He has been teaching for 10 years, and has participated in the Taxonomy Academy hosted by the SC Department of Education.

Melody Haigler (Curriculum Development Project) teaches Elementary Montessori grades 1-3 at McLaurin Elementary School in Florence, SC. She earned the BA degree from Newberry College, and is working on a Master's Degree from Lander University. She is also completing a practicum for Montessori Certification.

Dorothy M. Harris (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is professor of early education courses, supervisor of early childhood clinical experiences, and the coordinator of the Early Childhood Program at Francis Marion University. Dr. Harris is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, Atlanta University, and the University of Georgia. Her educational training is in the areas of philosophy, psychology, and early childhood education. Her work experience includes being a nursery school teacher and director, and teaching at both private and public elementary schools. Prior to her appointment at Francis Marion University, Dr. Harris taught at Fort Valley State College in Fort Valley, Georgia.

Valerie Harrison (District Contact) serves as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction in Florence School District 1. She earned the Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina, the Masters of Education from South Carolina State College and the Bachelor of Arts in English from South Carolina State College. Harrison has received numerous civic and professional awards and honors.

Shelia Hess (Clinical Faculty 2005, 2006, Marion School District 1; Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) is a 1st and 2nd grade teacher for Marion School District One, teaching children who are diverse in ability and ethnicity. She earned her Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Carolina. After completion of her Masters, Ms. Hess returned to her hometown of Marion, South Carolina to begin her teaching career. In 2002 she was named Distinguished Reading Teacher for Easterling Primary School and for Marion School District One.

Earlier, Stringfield worked as a teacher, a program evaluator, a Tulane University faculty member, and as coordinator of the Denver office of Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory. As a Kellogg Fellow, Stringfield studied the politics and economics of school improvement in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and Europe. He currently is a Robert Wood Johnson Urban Health Initiative Fellow, studying the interactions of diverse social systems as they impact health and education.

Kevin Swick (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is a Professor of Education at the University of South Carolina, Columbia. He has worked with several early childhood, parenting, and teacher education projects to address the complex issues of poverty, including Head Start, Even Start, and Title I teacher training. His emphasis on empowering teachers and families is reflected in his research and scholarly work. He has authored or co-authored more than 25 books and 100 articles and book chapters. Dr. Swick has taught for over 35 years in public schools and colleges/universities. He received his Ph. D. from the University of Connecticut in 1970.

Stephen Taylor (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force) is currently Professor of Education in graduate programs at Francis Marion University. He was formerly Director of Graduate Studies and program head for the Learning Disabilities and Instructional Accommodation/Divergent Learner options. His research has centered upon the diagnosis and accommodation of difficult learning configurations in normal students and brain dysfunctions within the special population. Dr. Taylor’s consulting specialties include test score and other performance analyses through descriptive and inferential statistics, family/ early literacy projects, and professional training for educators and social services personnel.

Sharon Thames (Clinical Faculty) received a B.S. degree from Winthrop College and a M.Ed. degree from Francis Marion University. She also holds an administration certification from USC. Thames has served as a special education teacher, a kindergarten teacher, and as curriculum coordinator, and much of her professional experience has been in Pee Dee region schools that serve children of poverty. She presently serves as a South Carolina Reading First Literacy Coach.

Joel Thayer (Undergraduate Modules) is Professor of Sociology at Francis Marion University. He earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in sociology from Stetson University; and the Master of Science Doctor of Philosophy degrees in sociology from Florida State University.

Nichole Thompson (Clinical Faculty) received both her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Francis Marion University. In her 9th year in education, she has taught child development, kindergarten, and 3rd grade. Thompson presently teaches 4th grade and serves as the grade level chairperson.

William Thompson (Action Research Project)
Morehead State University, Morehead, KY - graduated in 1982 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Environmental Studies and a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army.
Spent 22 years as an officer in the Army before retiring in 2002 and becoming a JROTC instructor at Latta High School, Latta, SC. I teach grades 9 through 12.

Tom Truitt (Pre-Service Teacher Education Task Force; In-service Teacher Education Task Force, In-service Teacher Education Task Force) was formerly the Executive Director of the Pee Dee Education Center, a consortium of eighteen school districts and Francis Marion University that was established in 1967 to provide support for the school districts in the region. Dr. Truitt works to obtain and coordinate direct services for member districts, and to facilitate the center’s role as an authoritative communications link with political and educational entities throughout South Carolina.

Rusty Ward (Undergraduate Modules) is Associate Professor of Sociology at Francis Marion University. He earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology from Kent State University.

Leesa Wesley (In-service Teacher Education Task Force) presently serves Marion School District One as the Curriculum Coordinator at Johnakin Middle School. She has participated in the Taxonomy Academy through the SC State Department of Education.

Richard D. West (Curriculum Development Project) is Associate Professor of Mathematics at Francis Marion University. He earned the B.S. degree in Mathematics from the US Military Academy, the M.S. in Applied Mathematics from University of Colorado, Boulder, and the Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from New York University.

Bill Whitmire (Curriculum Development Project) is Associate Professor of Mathematics and
Coordinator of Secondary Education Certification-Mathematics Programs at Francis Marion University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Lander College, the Master’s degree in Mathematics Education from the University of Kentucky, and the Education Specialist and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia. Dr. Whitmire’s research interests include using technology to enhance student understanding of mathematics from the kindergarten through college.

Carlotta Wiggins (In-service Teacher Education Task Force) presently serves as Curriculum Coordinator at Easterling Primary in Marion School District One. She has participated in the Taxonomy Academy through the SC State Department of Education.

Dr. Maria Williams (Curriculum Development Project) serves as Literacy Coach at Thornwell School for the Arts in Darlington, SC. She holds the B.S. degree in Family and Consumer Science South Carolina State University, an M Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Francis Marion University, and the Ph. D. in Professional Studies from Capella University.

Velma Wilson (Action Research Project) completed her undergraduate studies at Francis Marion University and a master’s degree from Walden University. She currently teaches fourth grade at Delmae Heights Elementary School in Florence School District One.
