FMU
Center of Excellence
Grant Proposal Narrative
2. Proposal Narrative
h. Institutional Commitment
An initial
meeting was held in December, 2003, to determine whether Francis
Marion University should seek a Center of Excellence. This meeting
was attended by Fred Carter, President; Richard Chapman, Provost;
Ron Faulkenberry, Dean of the School of Education; and Tom Truitt,
Executive Director of the Pee Dee Education Center. All four agreed
that the Center would be a great “fit” with FMU. All
pledged their commitment to, not only securing a Center, but ensuring
that the Center was successful in achieving its stated goals.
In terms of
resources, Francis Marion University has committed a Summer Stipend
for the co-directors and 20% of salary for an administrative assistant’s
time. This will amount to over $65,000 in real money for the five-year
project. In addition, the University will allocate two rooms at
over 300 ft2 and utilities located in the Pee Dee Education Center.
Also, the School of Business will provide a consultant for developing
and implementing a marketing campaign for the Center. The University
will provide technological support and assist in the establishment
of a web presence for the activities for the Center of Excellence.
During Years 3 through 5, the School of Education will commit $5,500
for supplies, printing, and postage, as well as $400 for telephone
service budget.
