h. institutional commitment
an initial
meeting was held in december, 2003, to determine whether francis
marion university should seek a center of excellence. this meeting
was attended by fred carter, president; richard chapman, provost;
ron faulkenberry, dean of the school of education; and tom truitt,
executive director of the pee dee education center. all four agreed
that the center would be a great “fit” with fmu. all
pledged their commitment to, not only securing a center, but ensuring
that the center was successful in achieving its stated goals.
in terms of
resources, francis marion university has committed a summer stipend
for the co-directors and 20% of salary for an administrative assistant’s
time. this will amount to over $65,000 in real money for the five-year
project. in addition, the university will allocate two rooms at
over 300 ft2 and utilities located in the pee dee education center.
also, the school of business will provide a consultant for developing
and implementing a marketing campaign for the center. the university
will provide technological support and assist in the establishment
of a web presence for the activities for the center of excellence.
during years 3 through 5, the school of education will commit $5,500
for supplies, printing, and postage, as well as $400 for telephone
service budget.
