As educators, we have both spent large portions of our teaching careers trying to figure out how to make learning stick. As classroom teachers, we absolutely loved what we were teaching, whether it was our 12th graders’ analyses of Daisy and Nick’s relationship in The Great Gatsby or our 10th graders’ protesting issues in the world of The Handmaid’s Tale and in their own communities. So why, then, did our students sometimes still look bored? And why didn’t they remember that one, really amazing lesson we taught way back in September?
