Teaching students to read requires a balance of phonics instruction with a love of literature and books, according to Mandy Ellis, principal of Dunlap Grade School in Illinois. In this blog post, Ellis and other educators share tips to help strengthen phonics instruction, including by focusing on students’ phonemic/phonetic knowledge, access to books, choice reading and independent reading time.
