Rural school districts are struggling to recruit and keep teachers, including one Wisconsin district where a fifth-grade teacher position was vacant for an entire year. University of Wisconsin-Madison researcher Peter Goff has studied the issue and says districts can boost retention by establishing strong support systems, increasing teacher pay and prioritizing school leadership.
