Detroit educator Holly Longo uses several strategies to teach a challenging K-8 literacy curriculum to her fifth-graders, a quarter of whom read at a kindergarten or first-grade level. Longo, a veteran teacher new to Detroit schools, guides students through vocabulary during read-alouds, has them practice reading to each other and practice skills on computers.
