A rural school district in Indiana facing closure because of declining enrollment partnered with private education corporation K12 Inc. to form a virtual school with students drawn from across the state and educators who teach online. The partnership helped increase enrollment from 256 students in 2016-17 to 937 students in 2017-18, according to the state’s education department, but critics are concerned about virtual schools’ low graduation and performance rates.
