While schools may think their approach to literacy is balanced, it may be lacking in one area – Phonics. There is a disconnect between the teaching of reading and the science of reading that can result in children with dyslexia to struggle learning to read. Background knowledge may be crucial for comprehension, but phonics are crucial for decoding and encoding.
