The nonprofit Playworks is overhauling the traditional free-play model of recess to offer a structured play program for students that teaches social and emotional skills, including communication and conflict resolution. For example, students are taught to resolve playtime disputes, such as whether a ball fell on one side or the other, with a game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors.”
