Students need more than exposure to academic vocabulary to begin using it confidently and effectively. This article shares three strategies for helping students develop academic and discipline-specific language through reading, discussion, writing, and explicit vocabulary instruction. Providing repeated opportunities to encounter and use new words in meaningful contexts can help students strengthen both their understanding and their ability to communicate what they know.
