The beginning of the school year is an important time for establishing routines and relationships, but that does not mean meaningful learning needs to wait. This article encourages teachers to make purposeful use of those first days by combining community building and classroom expectations with worthwhile academic experiences. Starting instruction early can communicate high expectations while setting the tone for a productive year.
