Using prizes to encourage and conterol behavior may not be the best way to alter behavior. They can impacts students in a negative way and be harmful to them. In his book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Daniel Pink identifies seven drawbacks to extrinsic rewards. Schools are now considering going away from this practice.
