Tracing the roots of the science of reading

Forty-five states and Washington, D.C., have spent the last few years adopting and implementing literacy standards aligned with the science of reading. Tracing the origins of the shift include the adoption of phonics-based approaches in the wake of reading performance improvements in Mississippi schools that had made the change in 2013 as well as recent laws and policies that have improved the identification of and support for students who have dyslexia
